Famous for breathtaking sunsets. Good swimming. Sea turtles often
swimming in the shallows, especially at the South end of bay. Please don't

Long and wide sandy beach with usually excellent swimming. Complete
facilities, clear water and gorgeous scenery. Snorkeling great at the south
end of the beach. Beware of rock hazards, strong current and surf. High
tide may erode most of the sand beach area. Obey all posted warnings.

Honokaope Beach

Small salt and pepper beach. Swimming and snorkeling fair when surf is

Kapanaia Bay

One of the best kept secrets in North Kohala. Not much sand and murky
water, but very scenic and a great place for picnics. Access requires a
4WD vehicle.

swimming.

Kiholo Bay

Beautiful bay, mixture of fresh and salt water, lava island in the center. Fantastic tide pools scatter the bay when the tide is out. Great for
snorkeling and swimming when surf is calm. Stay off private property
surrounding the bay!

Kikaua Beach

One of the prettiest, family friendly beaches on the Big Island. Pristine
white sand beach, surrounded by large groves of shade trees and lava
rock. Kukio Beach, another white sand, crescent shaped beach, is 100
yards north.

Long, crescent shaped, white sand beach surrounded by shade trees.
Snorkel or swim at the opening in the rocks towards the south end of the
beach. Green Sea Turtles swim here and bask on the beach. Please do not
disturb them!

Lapakahi State Historical Park

Scenic beach, snorkeling. Never crowded. Replicas of native Hawaiian
cultural items such as huts and ruins of building foundations. Game area
where visitors can try spear throwing, ‘ulu maika (disc rolling) and konane
(checkers).

Mahukona Beach Park

Actually an abandoned harbor used by a sugar company. Calm, clear
water, great for snorkeling and diving. Old mill equipment and a shipwreck
under water.

Mauna Kea Beach (Kaunaoa Beach)

One of the best beaches on the island. Perfect crescent shape, extending
for almost 1/4 mile. Natural rock reef provides some protection from the
surf. Located in front of the Mauna Kea Resort. Swimming, boogie
boarding. Snorkeling, especially around the rocks on the left side of beach.

Mauumae Beach

A hidden gem, pretty and secluded. Usually quiet during the week. Nice
place for picnics. Walking trail to Mauna Kea Beach. Snorkeling marginal.
Access through Mauna Kea Resort. Sometimes frequented by nudists.

Pololu Beach

Excellent view of Kohala Mountains and the coastline. Twenty minutes of
walking down steep steps to the beach area. No swimming or snorkeling
due to high surf and strong currents.

Puako Bay

Six accesses to this beach. Not much sand but great tidepools and reef.
Good snorkeling along the outer edges of reef, but use caution and check
ocean conditions before entering the water.

Protected by harbor breakwater and large reef. Water usually calm for
swimming, but slightly cloudy due to the harbor nearby.

Waialea (Beach 69)

Small sandy beach, usually almost deserted. Great swimming when there
is calm surf. Secluded cove to the north of the main beach. High surf
occasionally strips the sand from the beach.
